Why You Should Try Remaining In Your Present Job And The Downsides Of Starting A New One
There are lots of reasons why people may choose to quit their existing Careers, there’s the possibility that they’ve discovered something more suiting or perhaps the job just isn’t working out. Choosing to quit is often the easy way out of an unpleasant situation, there’s countless New careers available out there, so why suffer a bad one? But how about we stop and look at the other side of the argument, reasons why you could remain in the job. This is often something ignored due to what was said previously, it’s often easier to simply quit. Continuing in your current role can have its good points though, no doubt it does vary based on your circumstances, but you mustn’t be so quick to rule it out. Let’s have a look at a couple of the reasons why you may want to give it a second chance, it would undoubtedly be easier than looking for new Career ideas.
The first possible reason for keeping at a job is the possibility of development. Certainly this is very situational, but if you’ve worked in the job a while, you could have acquired some recognition, setting you in a good position to look at progressing. If you start applying for New careers, you’ll be right back at the beginning and have to work your way up again, but if you remain in your current role and put the effort in, you may end up in a higher paid position. Even if you don’t see yourself employed in the company long term, promotion to a greater role will look impressive on your CV and further your chances at finding a better career later in life.
A second reason people will choose to stay in their current Careers is for the familiarity. If you’ve worked there a while, the likelihood is you have made some decent friends and are comfortable with the work. It can sometimes be awkward trying to blend in with a new job, both the co-workers and the work are unfamiliar and it can take a while to settle in. By remaining at your current job you know what you’re doing and you most likely have people to turn to if you ever wanted help. People generally don’t like change, so it’s no surprise that this is one of the greatest reasons people keep at a job.
Lastly, another big reason for remaining in a job and dodging the search for New careers is job security. This is a significant reason for anybody with a family, as you can’t be sure a new job will work out and you could end up failing a probationary period and being out of work all together. This is a big disadvantage to looking at new Career ideas as the work may be completely different to what you were used to before and have a steep learning curve. If you can’t adapt to the new role you’ll be right back at the start searching for new work. If you’ve been in your current role for a while you’re possibly considered valuable, it makes business sense to keep familiar members of staff rather than bring in new ones.
