Bid farewell to the rush hour how to escape congested treks to the office by means of the World Wide Web
Throughout my career I have had the personal goal to reduce the journey I have to take to and from my job. The degree to which I have succeeded has fluctuated greatly, from tremendously long and tedious commutes, to the opportunity to work from home, completely removing the need to commute altogether.
I look back on my first job after finishing college. I lived in a bedsit only round the corner from my workplace. That was ideal, except for a slightly unhinged landlady and some very weird tenants in the same apartment block! My next job could not have been a greater contrast. I needed to take my car for 30 miles along one of the UK’s most crowded motorways. I struggled to achieve a speed of 20 miles an hour, especially in the morning. Even leaving home at the crack of dawn I could not be sure of a congestion-free journey. Of course, at that juncture, the idea of Internet business was as yet at an early stage, because few people were aware of the Internet.
After several years of that, I decided I’d had enough. However, what came next was not a great improvement. For eight years I commuted into the capital by train, swapping one variety of congestion for another. For all this period I put up with crowded trains, in conditions that would cause a scandal if you treated animals in the same manner. And yet it was not until I got laid off, that I resolved to re-evaluate matters. After countless fruitless hours sending applications via the online jobs pages, I discovered a chance to work from home, decide my own hours and do away with travelling to work altogether.
Undoubtedly, the crucial thing is the arrival of Internet business. The WWW makes it practically irrelevant where you are; there is no need to be sitting in the office when it’s possible to get in touch with people by electronic communications. This has significantly expanded the possibilities for employees to work from home. No long hold-ups at the station, no rushing for the train, no more time spent in traffic jams. And maybe most important of all, no clockwatching. I can determine my own hours, get started at the crack of dawn if it suits me, or elect to work later hours. The only significant factor is that I can complete my work tasks.
As we all become more and more concerned about the environmental effects of transport, especially the ‘carbon footprint’ of oil-based transport, Internet business can also give us the opportunity to decrease the emissions caused by huge amounts of travel in the working week.
A major factor, as an upshot of employment in online jobs, is the saving in money. We are all aware of how the cost of petrol has sharply increased recently. The imminent hike in VAT of an extra 2.5% will not improve matters. And if you have to travel by public transport, the impact on your wallet is no less onerous. When I worked in London, I paid more than three grand on rail tickets.
Whatever salary you earn is net of money deducted. Tax is something everyone has to pay. But the enormous sums of money we spend on transport to work, are in effect another type of tax, that it’s not necessary to pay any more. online jobs allow people to retain far more of their salary. That three thousand I shelled out on season tickets, will come in quite handy for a refreshing sea cruise – a much more appealing form of travel, I think!
