Although most applicants fear the dreaded 1-on-1 interview, they think that they’re safe because of their outstanding resume. What they don’t know is that they are completely wrong. A resume can only get you as much as an interview, but a successful interview can land you a job.

You wouldn’t want your interviewer to see you as an aloof person. The first impression is made, according to Mary Dawne Arden, executive coach and president of Arden Associates in New York, within 3-5 seconds. It means that the very moment you set foot inside the room, you have already been judged.

An applicant who doesn’t smile and gives a dead-fish handshake will have very little chance of getting accepted if, in the ensuing discussion, he doesn’t make himself more appealing. So when you walk in that room, be sure to have a smile on your face (not a plastered smile! It’s weird to talk to someone who is always smiling) and have a firm handshake. This will make you seem more confident. After getting that done, don’t ruin the first impression you gave by slouching on the chair. Look decent and educated by sitting up straight and not crossing your legs or tapping your foot. This is disrespectful to your interviewer and may make you seem bored or uninterested.

Using hand gestures and looking your interviewer straight in the eye can not only boost your confidence (in the eyes of your interviewer) but can also make you look real good in the eyes of the interviewer. When responding to a question, speak directly to the person who asked it. If there are several people at the interview, glance briefly at them, but always return to the questioner before ending your response.

Not only should you be good in managing your behavior, but you should also be good in interpreting other people’s actions. If you see your interviewer rubbing the back of his head or his neck, it means that he’s bored of the conversation. Liven it up by asking questions about the company. This will divert his attention back to your discussion.

A company interviewer said that he once interviewed a man in his 40s who kept dropping swear bombs during their talk. He had a good background but his words made no sense and so he didn’t get the job. Learn how to speak professionally. You are smart enough to know that that kind of language should never be used during interviews. Be attentive and always give smart answers.
