If I could choose from any New career that was open to me, I think I would have to pick a New career as an animator. I have always been a big fan of animated pieces, and in my spare time I do love to draw. However, I do not believe myself gifted enough to genuinely consider Careers within animation – however, as it’s an area I have always been interested in, I have done a lot of research into becoming an animator and the type of things you can expect from this line of work. I would like to share this information so that it may help others who are hunting for New careers get a better idea of whether or not Careers within animation are truly the best choice for them.

The main gift you need to be a successful animator, is not actually talent with drawing, although that really does help, but the main thing you ought to be is creative and imaginative. There are several different roles you can get into connected to animation. There is the ever more popular computer-generated animation, which presently is the most popular type of animation out there. There is also 2D computer animation, and also there is your established hand-drawn 2D animation. You can also get into animation utilising stop-motion, although this is becoming less and less popular within the main stream, it still holds its charms. For the more traditional animations, no recognised qualifications are asked for, just a good ability to draw and lots of imagination. For computer generated animation, more technical skills are necessary. Several people find that they might need to take a course in order to grasp the basics of this, but it can be learned at home in your spare time. A reasonable standard of technical knowledge is required however.

Animators can work various hours through the week, and pay is typically varied depending on what work they have available at any given time. On occasion animators will have to put in long hours in order to stick to deadlines. You will normally be working in an office or studio, and normally on a freelance basis, although on some rare occasions you could find a fulltime permanent job.

Whilst no recognised qualifications are actually needed to become an animator, many animators do have degrees either in art, animation, or a computer related degree. There are many courses out there as well to go on, to help you get better knowledge and understanding of different techniques and styles used by various animation styles. However, whilst qualifications are helpful and you normally will gain a lot by taking on a course, work experience and a great portfolio are the most critical things when it comes to animation. So for people hunting for New careers and possibly thinking about animation, it’s best to just dedicate your whole time to animating and obtaining a good name for yourself, as a great portfolio will impress a prospective employer or client more so than a few qualifications.
