The Problems Of Relocation Whether You Have To Move House In Order To Get A Good Job
The coalition government has announced that it wants to encourage people to transfer to regions of the UK where there are more employment opportunities. The purpose of this is to ease the mis-match between high levels of unemployment in many regions, and unfilled vacancies in others. But apart from the fact that there is no region of the country with nil unemployment, there are serious issues concerning whether moving to another area is desirable. Furthermore, since the appearance of Internet business, giving people the chance to work from home in online jobs, why does anyone have to go through the stress of relocation just to find paid work?
Relocating to another area may be more straightforward for some depending on their circumstances. Perhaps younger people, without children and not home owners, can quickly relocate to any part of the country or abroad to take up a job opportunity. Unfortunately in England, there is a culture that believes people should buy a house and settle down. Having bought a property, it is much harder to relocate. There is the difficulty of selling the house, and the notorious chains, with sales falling through at any point in the process due to unpredictable reasons. Then there is the difficulty of purchasing a property in the destination area. Moreover, for people relocating from blighted areas to more prosperous parts, they may discover that property prices are higher, leaving them struggling to take out a much higher mortgage.
This is to say nothing of the personal problems of moving; saying goodbye to your friends and being required to build up a fresh circle of friends in the new location. Moreover for families with children, the problems will affect them, also. Their schooling will be disrupted, and they will need to depart from their friends and make new friends at a new school. People have the headache of finding alternative schooling in the new city that is appropriate. Schools in a different area will probably not offer all the same subjects that your kids were studying before.
Many companies also expect staff to move around the country a lot. I recall an acquaintance who was a bank manager, and he was asked to move to to a remote rural community in Wales. His wife did not like the idea, and he turned down the opportunity. As a result, he was never offered any form of promotion.
So if people cannot get a job in their own locality, is there an alternative to moving to another area? Internet business has made it, to a great extent, unimportant where you work. For example, what difference does it make what city or county I was in when I wrote this article, or where anyone else is when they read it? I can work from home, doing whatever I can make money in, so effectively a new kind of online jobs has been born, allowing companies to have dealings with their clientele via the Internet.
So, perhaps the way to deal with the jobs shortage is not for the jobless to ‘get on their bike’ as the old phrase goes, but to get onto the Internet, and find the online jobs that may allow them to work from home. Some may necessitate a modest investment, in capital or training. But in comparison, how much does it cost when you’re moving house – in house seeking, surveyors and solicitors fees, and so on? They are hardly likely to be less, and the social and psychological costs are not something you can put a figure on.
For those who actually want to move to another part of the country for motives of their own, obviously they will have to make the move. However with the openings available in Internet business, it is no longer necessary to ’get on their bike’ just to look for work.
