Which Equipment Is Needed To Deliver A Smooth Transition To Working At Home
working from home used to be taken up mostly by the self employed and the low paid and low skilled end of the employment market. For the unskilled, they could take in fairly basic piece meal labour as and when they had the capacity and in exchange they received a small wage, the better paid of the bunch being the ones who could make or deliver a large quantity of units per hour. For the self employed role, working at home typically meant laying your books out over the kitchen table as you struggled to get your financial recorde up to date for the year.
With IT has come a transformation. More and more tasks can now be carried out at an employee’s home and this gives a great opportunity for employers to make use of a skilled and motivated workforce while forcing their costs down because the need for a reduced amount of office space, canteen commitments and social space for staff.
For an individual to work from home at the same time maintaining the necessary links to their office or organisation they need relatively few items. Of course the first one would be a PC, or possibly for more flexibility, a notebook, so that they have access to emails, internet, skype etc. Preferably the computer should have a webcam to alleviate some of the isolation experienced by the employee. Next a fast internet connection is required. Many individuals already have this so this represents another potential cost saving for the organisation, although a contribution to the invoice at least would seem reasonable, particularly if download amounts will be high. The only other items required are a good telephone, on a separate line to the worker’s home line and possibly a printer. Other items specifc to certain roles may be required in specific roles but generally there is no extra outlay for a home worker than an office worker and the pluses can be considerable.
As companies catch on to the increased possibilities there will be more alternative for those wanting to work from home and the “online surveys for money” sort of work will be one option in a wide range of opportunities.
