How Working At Home Changed My Thinking On Driving And Vehicle Ownership.
When I began to work from home nine months ago I unsurprisingly discovered a massive drop in the amount of mileage I was doing. In fact, as most of my work is Online jobs, I rarely need to drive and I have discovered that sometimes several days elapse during which the car stays unused. Next month the car lease expires and I am giving serious thought to my transport needs over the coming months whilst I continue to work from home.
Many vehicle lease plans provide a fixed annual mileage, often it is 10,000. If you don’t travel 10,000 miles annually then you still have to pay the fixed monthly lease amount and there is often no reduction. If you Work from home full time like I do then you might find that your annual mileage is somewhat less than 10,000 so a lease contract of this type will be uneconomical.
For this reason I am almost certainly not going to carry on leasing a car. My other options are to buy one for cash. However this doesn’t appeal because it will use up a considerable amount of capital. Additionally, my partner owns a car which is perfect for social and domestic use , so I am giving consideration to not having a car at all and renting one if and when required.
Looking over my work from home diary I reckon that during the past six months I would have got away with car hire on nine individual days. Researching daily car hire costs I reckon I can hire a suitable car for in the region of £30 per day, meaning my total six months motoring cost will be no more than £300 in total. Plus I could push the boat out and get something grander should I choose.
So that’s now how I plan to arrange my driving for as long as I continue to work from home.
